How to Run ISO 27001 Employee Security Training — From Training to Audit Evidence

ISO 27001 does not just ask whether you held a training session — it asks you to prove employees actually understood. This guide breaks down what the clauses require and how to produce audit evidence end to end.

Updated 2026-10-16

Many companies discover the gap only a week before the audit: the training happened, but they cannot produce the evidence the auditor wants. The issue is not whether a class was held, but whether you can prove understanding and trace it to each person.

What does ISO 27001 require for training?

ISO/IEC 27001:2022 requires training in three places: Clause 7.2 requires ensuring people are competent, Clause 7.3 requires organization-wide security awareness, and Annex A control 6.3 explicitly lists "information security awareness, education and training".

At the audit, the certification body does not just check that training happened — it looks for evidence: who was trained, on what, whether they genuinely understood (usually shown by a test), and whether records trace back to the individual and date.

  • Clause 7.2 Competence — people are competent, with retained evidence
  • Clause 7.3 Awareness — everyone understands the policy and their responsibilities
  • Annex A 6.3 — regular security awareness, education and training

Why do common approaches stall at audit time?

The usual approach is "slides plus a sign-in sheet", but that has three blind spots at audit time: a signature proves attendance, not understanding; paper records are scattered and must be compiled at the last minute; and the training content drifts from the company's actual SOPs, so detailed auditor questions expose the gap.

What an ISO audit really wants is a traceable chain of evidence that proves understanding — which is exactly what a sign-in sheet cannot stand on alone.

What training evidence will the auditor ask for?

In practice, security auditors commonly ask for the following documents, so it pays to have them ready in advance:

  • A training plan and its coverage (who, which topics, how often)
  • Each employee's training record and completion date
  • Test scores and pass certificates that demonstrate understanding
  • Remedial training records for anyone who failed or did not complete
  • Evidence that training content matches the company security policy

The full flow

Turning "training" into "deliverable audit evidence" breaks down into five steps:

  1. 1
    Map your SOPs

Map existing security policies and procedures to ISO 27001 controls, confirming each requirement has a matching source for training material.

  2. 2
    Build tests from the SOPs

Design questions from your actual policies, so employees are tested on your company's rules rather than generic knowledge.

  3. 3
    Test employees online

Let staff complete the test on any device, with a pass threshold and retake rules so only a genuine pass counts as complete.

  4. 4
    Issue individual certificates

Those who pass receive a training certificate with a timestamp and score as individual-level evidence.

  5. 5
    Compile the audit report

Consolidate every employee's training time, scores and pass list into one audit report, ready to hand over at audit time.

FAQ

Is employee training mandatory for ISO 27001?+

Yes. Clause 7.3 and Annex A 6.3 both require organization-wide security awareness, with auditable evidence of both training and understanding.

Can a sign-in sheet count as ISO audit training evidence?+

A sign-in sheet only proves attendance, not understanding. Auditors usually ask for test scores to evidence comprehension, so a sign-in sheet rarely stands on its own.

How often should security awareness training run?+

ISO 27001 requires it "regularly"; in practice most organizations run it at least annually, plus on major policy changes and for new hires.

With many shift-based employees, how do we ensure everyone completes it?+

Online testing lets staff complete it on any device, while admins track completion and failures by department to arrange remedial training and keep records.
